ABOUT THIS HUNT:
My outfitter Jason who is primarily an Elk outfitter partnered with another outfitter Travis who was the bear and Mountain Lion expert. Jason made a wise decision to have Travis help us out on this hunt because we felt dogs were necessary.
Another outfitter friend of Jason's, Mike Stockton (deer and bear) was also asked to help out because we needed extra hands on deck. It was winter time and none of us wanted to risk being short of help. Besides, there was a huge tract of land to cover! We all went off in different directions looking for fresh tracks on snowshoes, snowmobile and trucks using logging roads, trails and back country roads.
We cut the tracks of a large male and reconvened the group. We got the dogs on the trail. On the first day by the time we got to the treed cat it had gotten away and it was too dark to do anything. We pulled the dogs off the trail. By dark the next day the animal is treed again right next to a cliff. This cat wasn't the largest I've shot (I've shot several before with a bow) but this was the first with a rifle.
The only true predator is their own species and man. Man isn't a big factor in predation because of the remoteness of the area. One mountain lion kills something every three days and it's usually an elk or a deer. You can imagine the overall effect on the elk and deer herd.
ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:
Mountain Lion
You can probably tell from the look on my face and the big "hug" I'm giving this cat that this animal would make any hunter smile with satisfaction! A very respectable cat who wouldn't hesitate for a second to eat his fellow predator (me) for lunch!
