ABOUT THIS HUNT:
We flew in and for the first few days we were completely socked in with weather (fog & rain) which wasn't necessarily a bad thing because I was run down from a previous sheep hunt and battling one heck of a stamina draining cold. Odd really because in 1989 it was the same story. I just hunkered down in my motel room and tried to get better.
Finally the weather lifted and we boarded a float plane headed into the bush and landing in a little lake. Nothing like arriving just as the rut was starting!
The nice part of this kind of hunting is you're able to walk directly from camp and begin glassing the terrain. There was no shortage of moose. We saw 18 the first day! The terrain was kinda open tundra like caribou prefer with what seemed like hundreds of lakes scattered about. We found the moose were you would expect them, along the lake shores and hanging tight to the shoreline and thick brush.
The moose we finally selected was definitely on the move. I always tell other hunters who ask, if you're not in decent shape don't even consider this type of hunt. Sometimes you have to hussle to get into position and have to be able to quickly control your breathing. Such was the case here!
We manuevered around a cut to position ourselves in front of the moose. "Ah ha!" I thought to myself whatever way he choses to move we've got him or so we thought.
He caught wind of us in our tracks and headed back the opposite way. We had to react quick or he would be out of range and with no shot opportunity.
I called to him to get him to stop which is all I needed at 250 yards. The broadside shot gave me an opportunity to take out both lungs. Down he went. This is the type of humane kill we all strive for.
