ABOUT THIS HUNT:
The unique thing about this elk hunt was the pervasive fog. Once the fog began to burn off it was time to hunt but before this happened you might as well forget glassing and stalking. At times, you literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face!
This private ranch owned by Pete Silaccis is only 10 miles from ocean, fog rolls in in the morning an envelopes the valleys and sometimes consumes the whole area of the property.
We managed to stay dry in the 45-50 degree weather by taking the jacket off here and there.
After some basic scouting and orientation to the property we were able to watch our animal walk into a shaded tree area and bed. I figured he wouldn't move so it became a waiting game. We went back down the trail and decided to have some lunch.
After lunch we found cows browsing in the field near the last known point of our shooter. Our elk was still there only now he was up and milling around occasionally bumping his cows.
It was a classic 300 yard downhill one shot kill. Down he went. We managed to get a really cool vapor trail from the bullet to the animal on film. The heat of the day was coming on hard and contributed to this phenomena. As providence would have it, we were able to drive the pickup truck up very near the animal and load em up.
Postscript:
I saw my first professional baseball game at 55 years old while on this trip. It went right to the last inning and was more exciting than I had anticipated!
