ABOUT THIS HUNT:
To be honest I expected rain every single day but it rained only once at night. Didn't even have to break out the trusty Gore-Tex. We ate like kings on this trip and I must confess it was one of the best hunts I've ever been on. Our outfitter Eric Mikkelson had set prawn traps which were downright tasty! We also ate clams and steak!
The first bear I shot was with my Browning A-bolt on 4.24.05 This beauty was a real nice 7'+ bear with a 19.5" skull.
The second bear I shot was on 4.26.05 with the new Redhead XP35 bow using Razor Shark broadheads and my extremely reliable Tru Ball Pro Diamond release. This particular hunt involved my favorite style of hunting.
Bears were coming out for the lush green grass along the shore line and we were scouting the scene from our boat and Swarovski optics. We saw three bears along the shore and we pulled the boat ashore. I got within 20 yards of the biggest bear but when we got a closer look at him we realized he was all rubbed out so I passed.
We moved on down the coast line. We spotted another good sized bear, put the boat into shore and stalked up and onto a pile of driftwood and waited for the shot. A perfect but severe quartering away shot presented itself. I put the arrow in just forward of the rear leg and it traveled the length of this bear's body and through the heart finally lodging in the front shoulder on the other side. He went 25 yards and folded up.
